FAQs

  • A Birth Keeper is someone to help you find your conviction to believe in your power, learn to trust, connect and listen to your body, and that helps you through the transformation of birth.

As Birth Keepers we attend births without the presence of a medical professional (ie midwife). These births are outside of the medical system.

The term Birth Keeper comes from the original idea of "Earth Keeper". Meaning a person who respects, protects, and honors the earth. Birth Keepers do the same but for birth.

  • Doulas are trained professionals that provide education, emotional, and physical support throughout the childbearing process.

Our goal is to ground you in your intuition, root you in our knowledge and support you physically and emotionally through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

We will walk along side you as you go through this transformative time in your life. We will share our knowledge and expertise, listen to your thoughts and concerns, will aid you to advocate, and hold space for your birth as Doulas have done for centuries.

  • A doula and birth keepers does not mean that your birth partner has been made obsolete. During pregnancy, birth, and postpartum our support is for the whole family. This means we support you, your partner, and any kids or pets you have.

During labor we can help our partner by giving guidance, reassurance, or a break when he needs is.

We are additional hands for hip squeezes, will make sure drinks and snacks are within arms reach, but mostly provide knowledge and reassurance throughout this phase in your life.

  • We are available to join you in labor from the time you sign with us. We know baby’s come when they choose (as Makalae can attest to) so limiting our on call time to 2-4 weeks is not supportive to you.

We will join you in labor when you need us. Active labor looks different for everyone so we will be in communication with you to see how you are feeling. If you want us to join you we will.

  • While we will join you whenever you need us when you are in labor. We also recognize that there may come a time that we need to rest or refresh.

Once we arrive we will make assessments by watching and seeing. We will ensure you have the support you need but if labor continues for many hours (like Phoebe’s birth of Cleo) we may let your birth partner know that we are stepping away and when we’ll be back, or may rest somewhere you are comfortable with us resting.

  • As a partnership we create schedules that allow us to be with our clients at the time of the birth. We also take limited clients to ensure we will be able to attend your birth.

We also have a network of backup birth workers. Should there be a need, we will match you with one of them based on all we know. We do not expect to need to make use of this but do have it.

  • Some insurances do cover Doulas given the very clear positive impact Doulas have birth and postpartum health. We can provide you a bill to submit for reimbursement with your insurance.

That being said, there are a lot of challenges that are presented by the idea of Doulas being covered by insurance. We do not believe that it would be in our clients best interest for Doulas to be in-network covered by insurances. Doulas responsibility to the client would then need to shift to being responsible to other authorities (doctors, hospitals, insurances etc).

  • Any birthing person can benefit from our Birth Education Course but we did design with someone who is striving to have an unmedicated, no-to-low intervention birth in mind.

  • The hats we wear as a Doula/Birth Keeper vs as a Child Birth Educator are slightly different. As the former, our primary objective is to support. As a Child Birth Educator we strive to educate.

While you get our expertise when we support your birth, the Child Birth course allows a deep dive of all the information and comfort measures.

  • We are certified by BEST Doula one of the leading and local organizations training Doulas and Child Birth Educators.

We do however feel that any Doulas needs to supplement their certification with a passion for birth, knowledge, and by being integrated into the web of birth workers.

The two years following our certification we found ourselves pulling further and further from the medicul system. With each birth at a hospital and birth center we saw the disruption of physiological birth. This made us continue to connect with the Free Birth community and deep dive into the autonomous choices possible in birth. We believe that we were birth keepers prior to and after our formal doula certifications. We have been taking root our communities in the wisdom of birth and the powers of women.

  • For our birth services we require a 50% retainer of the total charges in order to accept you as a client. From there you can make payments at your own pace with the remainder of the total cost is due at 36 weeks of pregnancy.

Child Birth Education and Postpartum Support packages need to paid in full at the time of booking.
