Our Methodology

We believe birth should be grounded, supported, and rooted. Grounded in intuition and trust in your own body.

Supported emotionally and physically by those whom you trust into your birth circle.

Rooted in knowledge from the women that came before you for centuries and the sciences that has shed light onto whats happening under the surface.

While we now know so much about what happens during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum; much of this experience is still mystical and unique. We strive to provide information to revolutionize your birth, take back your autonomy, and enable the self-discovery that will connect your mind, body, and baby.

About Us

Phoebe Nelson

Pregnancy started the largest transformation for me. I made a decision to be intentional. Intentional about how my kids would enter this world and how I would raise them every day after that.

I had two unmedicated home births in which incredible midwifes and my husband supported me. Neither were that magical water birth I dreamt of but both were incredibly powerful. You can read about the birth of Cleo (my first, 57 hour labor) and the birth of Nova (my second, the power of affirmations).

I’ve been breastfeeding since 2017 continuously, breastfed through my second pregnancy. and tandem fed. While I went in thinking we’d breastfeed for 12 month, the connection and support I had with my girls during breastfeeding (and the ease after those painful first weeks) made me continue on and learn all about the benefits of extended breastfeeding.

I am a birth keeper, certified doula, certified birth education, and lactation mentor. However, the passion I have for birth work goes much further than any one certification could show. I geek out over this stuff and am the odd dinner guest who talks about the magic and energy of women especially during this transformative period of motherhood.

Makalae Glass

Birth is women’s right of passage. During my pregnancy, I took it upon myself to absorb all the information about child birth and postpartum. I prepared mentally and physically. Ensuring I was providing the proper nutrients to my body and baby, having my body in shape for labor, and connecting body, baby and mind.

I had my son Jack in a precipitous birth center labor (3 hours). The birth was rapid and intense, teaching me that as much as you prepare, birth will always take you by surprise. After his birth I was in awe of the connection gained with this experience. Feeling that oxytocin high!

From the beginning I knew I wanted to breastfeed both for comfort and antibodies beyond infancy and well into toddlerhood. Our biggest challenge breastfeeding was during our NICU stay (when Jack was 2 weeks old). Receiving outdated and wrong guidance about breastfeeding from the staff lactation consultant fueled me to keep going and learning.

I am a birth keeper, certified doula, lactation mentor, and meditation guide. I strive to continue to expand my expertise and share them with my community of mamas.

More about us

We met in 2000, when we were pre-teens, and have been friends ever since! While there have been phases in our life that we have been separate by distance we have always found ways of staying connected.

In 2019 we had the extreme joy of being pregnant together. Makalae with her first, Jack, and Phoebe with her second, Nova. Not only did we support each other during the transformation, we also found that we shared the same ideology when it came to childbearing, birth, and raising kids.

We founded Rooted Births to bring together a community that know they deserve better than the transactional medicalized pregnancy experience so common. We hope that we can revolutionize women’s birth experiences and create connection to the strength in our bodies.
